Physical Education at The Smith School
The Smith School’s Athletics elective blends theory and practice for a deeper understanding of physical activity. The first half focuses on the science of motion—exploring biomechanics, flexibility, strength, and injury prevention through engaging discussions, exams and student presentations. The second half puts knowledge into action with energizing physical activities including agility tests and drills, strength exercises and introduction to sports. The Athletics Elective class is for students of all levels interested in enhancing their knowledge and ability in athletics.
The goal of physical education at The Smith School is to help all students not only develop physically but also develop knowledge, skills and confidence that will lead towards a lifetime of healthful physical activity to the best of one's own individual abilities.
As with all educational programs at The Smith School, physical education is tailored to each student's individual needs, abilities and goals. A variety of activities are offered each week ranging from competitive athletics to activity-based games, dance, and yoga, as well as teaching strategies for individual physical fitness. With this variety, each student can engage in physical activity that is right for them. The school’s physical gym space allows for a variety of activities to occur simultaneously so that all students have access to full program offerings for the full duration of physical education class. We are also fortunate to have Central Park as our backyard, providing us with an incredible outdoor space for physical activities. When the weather warms up, we take full advantage of this natural setting for activities such as jogging, team sports, and fitness exercises, giving students an opportunity to enjoy movement in an open and dynamic environment.
Physical education at Smith allows students to:
• Learn the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities
• Know the implications and the benefits of involvement in various types of physical activities
• Participate regularly in physical activity
• Value physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle
Team Athletics Program
For students who are interested in participating in additional competitive athletic activities, The Smith School is a member of The Metro League athletics organization. The Smith School Squids compete against other similar private, independent and charter schools throughout the New York City metro area in soccer (7 vs. 7), basketball, and ping pong. While games are competitive, there is a heavy emphasis on sportsmanship and having fun. The Smith School athletics program is a great opportunity for students who are interested in team sports to build their athletic skills while gaining all of the positive experiences that come with being part of a team.
