The Smith School
Music Department
The Smith School music program provides students an outlet to tap into their creativity and explore music in exciting ways. Through performance-based goals, music production projects, instrumental tuition and music theory, students explore a wide variety of musical styles and skills throughout the year. A cornerstone of our music program is the Fall and Spring Showcase, where students perform a concert that increases confidence, fosters a sense of camaraderie, and involves the whole Smith community.
In music class, students get to choose between guitar (classical/rock), ukulele, drums, bass, piano/keyboards, music theory, voice, or music production. Students are not required to have previous knowledge of these instruments upon entering the program. Through the process of learning something new or developing existing skills, students develop character traits such as discipline, perseverance, teamwork, patience, self-control, problem solving, and empathy.
The Smith School has a well equipped recording facility which allows students to make professional level recordings. Recording gives students a goal to work towards and also an opportunity to showcase their musical talents to friends and family.
Students are welcome to use the facilities to create audition videos for college applications and online auditions. Past students have successfully auditioned for the Berklee College of Music in Boston and have received scholarships for Whittier College in California.
