Community Service at Smith School:
Giving Back and Growing Together
At Smith School, we believe in the importance of giving back to our community. As part of our commitment to service learning, all high school students are required to complete 60 hours of community service by graduation, with 15 hours expected each year.
To support this goal, we have dedicated Community Service Days built into our academic calendar each Fall and Spring. During these days, students collaborate with the Riverside Park Conservancy, participating in hands-on projects that enhance both the local environment and community. Additionally, The Smith School participates in a yearly Pantry Food Drive in partnership with The Ronald McDonald House, further reinforcing our commitment to supporting families in need.
Beyond these school-wide service days, students in grades 9-12 are responsible for completing their remaining service hours independently. This expectation fosters a strong sense of responsibility, civic engagement, and personal growth.
Over the years, Smith School students have partnered with several impactful organizations, including Ronald McDonald House, Bideawee Animal Shelter, and CityArts, engaging in meaningful service projects that make a real difference. Additionally, many students have independently worked with organizations such as Xavier Food Pantry, The YMCA, JCC, and Beth Torah Temple to fulfill their remaining service hours.
Through these experiences, we aim to instill in our students a lifelong commitment to service and community involvement.
