Beyond the Classroom:
Smith Talks on Real-Life Skills
Named after Ted Talks, Smith Talks are biweekly lunchtime talks delivered by teachers (and sometimes students!) on any subject having to do with real life skills. These optional talks are very popular with our students, who are interested in preparing for real life in ways that most schools don’t teach in the classroom. Everyone gathers around free pizza to learn, share, and practice important skills for life after Smith.
Topic ideas are derived from student suggestions as well as knowledge or skill gaps identified and addressed by teachers. Past subjects have included:
How to search for an apartment
Getting involved in community service
Navigating public transportation
Healthy skin care
How to vote
Investing 101
College life panel
And many more!
