Supporting Families During
the College Planning Process

Our college counseling program is designed to be personalized and responsive to each student's unique path, whether they are college-bound, pursuing a specialized program, entering the workforce, or considering a transitional year. Beginning in 11th grade and continuing throughout 12th grade, the counselor works closely with students and their families, providing ongoing guidance at every stage.

We know that applying to college is a family process and a family decision. To that end, we begin students’ senior year by sharing a "Roadmap to College" presentation with families that provides an in-depth overview of the college application process. This resource highlights key milestones, including application timelines, College Board testing dates, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, accommodation services, and more. Support continues throughout the year in order to empower families with the knowledge they need to confidently navigate the post-graduation journey.

In addition to timeline planning, our college counselor connects families with essential information on financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and useful resources to assist families in making informed decisions. Understanding that each student has unique academic needs, the counselor also works closely with families to ensure that students receive appropriate academic support in college. Whether a student requires accommodations based on an IEP, neuropsychological evaluation, or medical documentation, our counselor helps families navigate the process of securing these services at the college level. This includes providing guidance on how to communicate with disability support offices, understanding different institutions' policies, and gathering necessary documentation to ensure a smooth transition.

Through one-on-one meetings, group counseling sessions, and expert-led discussions, we create a supportive environment where families feel informed and empowered. With a history of guiding students to a wide range of colleges and universities, The Smith School is committed to ensuring that every student and their family receives the support they need to navigate the college planning process with confidence.
