Language, & Literacy Support

Our Speech Language Therapy program aims to help students to better communicate and express themselves in all ways, inside and outside of the classroom. Our Speech-Language Pathologist uses evidence-based techniques and strategies to encourage development of each student's ability to access information and communicate effectively across academic and social situations as it relates to the student's specific needs. Specifically, the Speech Language Pathologist is trained to incorporate components of communicative language teaching (CLT), and executive functioning methodologies to target the student's specific therapy goals. The Smith School Speech-Language Pathologist targets an array of clinical topics, which can include:

Literacy Support at The Smith School focuses on promoting growth on a student's reading level. Smith School’s Literacy Specialist works with students to improve their phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension and writing skills within both individual and small group settings. Literacy support is also available through WordSmiths, a highly intensive afterschool program based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Using interactive and multisensory elements, we strive to help students with learning differences to further develop their skills as readers and spellers.
